While Samsung and Warby Parker are focusing on the audio-first smart glasses market, XREAL and Google used Google I/O 2026 to showcase the progress of Project Aura.
Premium Display AR
Project Aura represents the "Display" track of the Android XR ecosystem. Unlike the lightweight audio frames launching this fall, Project Aura features high-resolution OLED displays capable of full AR overlays. The latest prototype shown at I/O features:
- Dual 4K OLED Displays: Providing crisp, spatial workspace environments.
- 6DoF Tracking: Full spatial awareness without external sensors.
- Android XR Integration: The first non-headset device to run the full Android XR display shell.
The "Wired" Advantage
To keep the weight down and performance up, Project Aura remains a "tethered" experience, designed to plug into a Galaxy phone or a dedicated compute puck. This allows for a much slimmer profile than the Apple Vision Pro while maintaining superior thermal performance.
Release Window
Google and XREAL are positioning Project Aura as a "Developer and Pro" device for 2026. While it won't be part of the initial Fall launch wave, a limited release is expected by December 2026, with a broader consumer push in early 2027.
Project Aura serves as the high-end counterpart to the Samsung "Intelligent Eyewear," ensuring the Android XR platform covers everything from casual AI audio to professional spatial computing.
