Meta was first to prove the market for AI smart glasses with the Ray-Ban Meta, which shipped over 3 million units in 2025. But with Samsung Galaxy Glasses pre-orders opening in late August and Android XR's full ecosystem arriving this fall, Meta is under pressure to respond. Leaked specs and supplier filings suggest the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 4 is further along than previously reported.
What the Leaks Show
Supply chain sources and an FCC filing first spotted by hardware tracker The Accessory Report point to the following upgrades in the next Ray-Ban Meta:
- Upgraded Snapdragon AR1 Gen 2 chip (vs. the current AR1 in Samsung's device, suggesting Meta is chasing a chip-generation lead)
- Dual front cameras upgraded from 12MP to 16MP with optical zoom capability
- Extended battery life — 10 hours active, up from 8 on current Gen 3
- New frame compatibility with prescription-ready clip-in lenses (a direct response to Samsung's Warby Parker Rx integration)
- Meta AI "Aria" mode — a persistent, always-on AI companion with emotional context memory between sessions
No pricing details have leaked, but analysts expect Meta to hold the $329 line or drop to $299 to match Samsung's entry tier head-on.
Meta's Structural Advantage
Despite the competitive pressure, Meta holds advantages that Android XR cannot close quickly:
Distribution. Ray-Ban Meta glasses are sold in over 4,000 retail locations globally, including standalone Ray-Ban stores. Samsung Galaxy Glasses launch at Samsung.com, select Best Buy, and Warby Parker — a narrower footprint at launch.
AI maturity. Meta AI on current Ray-Ban hardware has had 18 months of real-world refinement. Gemini on Android XR Glasses is launching at v1.0.
Brand recognition. Ray-Ban is a 80-year-old eyewear brand. "Galaxy Glasses" is new. For buyers who want glasses that don't look like tech gadgets, Ray-Ban still has an edge.
Google's Counter-Move
Google is reportedly in talks with EssilorLuxottica — Ray-Ban's parent — about a separate Android XR frame licensing deal beyond the existing Warby Parker and Gentle Monster partnerships. If Google can put Android XR hardware in an actual Ray-Ban frame, Meta's most durable advantage evaporates. Those negotiations have not concluded.
The Fall Battlefield
The smart glasses market in Fall 2026 shapes up as a three-horse race: Samsung Galaxy Glasses (Android XR), Meta Ray-Ban Gen 4, and the existing Meta Ray-Ban Gen 3 at a discounted price. Apple's AR glasses remain at least 12–18 months away by all credible estimates.
For consumers, the competition means more choice and better value than the category has ever offered. For Meta, the next 90 days before Samsung ships are the last window to establish Gen 4 before Android XR resets market expectations.
