While the Android XR ecosystem is accelerating toward a Fall 2026 launch, Apple's spatial computing roadmap appears to be undergoing a significant strategic pivot. Recent reports from supply chain analysts indicate that Apple has suspended development on the long-rumored budget-friendly "Vision Air" headset.

The Vision Pro 2 Delay

The true successor to the original Vision Pro—expected to feature a lighter design and improved battery life—is now reportedly delayed until 2028. Apple is instead focusing on incremental software updates for the current M5-powered Vision Pro refresh (released in late 2025).

"Vision Air" Suspended

The "Vision Air" model, which was aimed at a $2,000 price point, has reportedly been put "on ice." Sources suggest that Apple struggled to reduce costs without compromising the high-fidelity experience that defines the Vision brand. This leaves a massive price gap in Apple's lineup, with only the $3,499 premium model currently available.

Shifting Focus to Smart Glasses

In a move that mirrors the success of Meta and the impending Android XR launch, Apple is allegedly shifting its engineering resources toward lightweight AR smart glasses. These would focus on AI (Siri), audio, and cameras rather than a full immersive display. However, these glasses are not expected to launch until late 2027 at the earliest.

visionOS 26.5 and Accessibility

Despite the hardware delays, Apple continues to push the boundaries of visionOS. The latest 26.5 beta includes "Vehicle Motion Cues" to reduce motion sickness and a groundbreaking "Power Wheelchair Control" feature that uses eye-tracking to navigate drive systems.

For now, the battle for the "mass market" face-worn computer seems to have shifted in favor of the more affordable, lightweight smart glasses being championed by Google and Samsung.
